Lord Isanagi Nakadai |
 |
In a story told by Mammon, Lord Isanagi Nakadai was a great and powerful warrior in feudal Japan. As a reward for a great victory for his emperor, Nakadai was awarded a province of his own. His joy was short lived, however, when he returned home to find that his wife and child had fallen victim to fever during his conquest.
Inconsolable, Nakadai's province fell into disrepair from his neglect. At the advice of a respected old man, Nakadai left his province once again to find and slay his personal dragon. He roamed the country as a ronin and accomplished many great deeds in pursuit of his dragon.
In one town he banished a group of 5 demon brothers from their holy temple, possibly the notorious Phlebiac Brothers. One day, Nakadai came across an ancient temple on a cliff and investigated. It was there that he finally found his dragon.
After a fierce and close battle, Nacadai was victorious, but he neglected the most important advice he had received from the old man - before the dragon dies, look it in the eye to discover that which you need most.
The story grew hazy from this point. It seems possible that Nakadai died with his dragon and returned to his province years later as a hellspawn. Upon his return he discovered ruins where his town had been and a usurper upon his throne. Nakadai was filled with rage and disbelief at who the usurper was, but Mammon never revealed that part of the tale.
Many centuries later, a mysterious box was opened by one of Nakadai's ancestors through the machinations of Mammon. This led to a number of lost souls being released, including Lord Nakadai. Spawn intervened to lead the souls to a final end, and between he and Nakadai, a final battle was waged.
Spawn fought fiercely to provide Nakadai an honorable death, which he received. For this, Nakadai looked Spawn - his second dragon, in the eye and thanked him. There he finally saw the thing he needed most - pity. |
